Anthony Absalom

Anthony Absalom University of Groningen, Netherlands

Anthony (Tony) Absalom studied medicine at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and underwent specialist training in East Anglia and Scotland in the UK. He is currently Professor of Anesthesiology at the University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen University, Netherlands. For several years, his clinical interests have been procedural sedation, anaesthesia for neurosurgery, and intravenous anaesthesia techniques. His research interests are mostly in the domains of pharmacology and neuroscience. He is an editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, past President of the Society for Intravenous Anaesthesia, Chairman of the Neuroanaesthesia Section of the Dutch Association of Anaesthetists, and is currently Chair of the General Anaesthesia Scientific Sub-committee of the ESA.

Professor Takashi Asai, graduated at a Japanese university (Ksansai Medical University) in 1987, and obtained doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree at a British medical university (University of Wales College of Medicine (currently Cardiff University)) in 1997, is a professor of a Japanese university (Dokkyo Medical university), as well as an international societies of anaesthesia (Difficult airway society) faculty professor. His area of interests includes airway management, gut function, statistical analysis, ethics, and medical history. He is an editor of several journals (including British Journal of Anaesthesia), and has published more than 500 articles and textbooks, and has given lectures more than 150 times.

Dan Berkowitz The University of Alabama, USA

Dr. Berkowitz is currently the new Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He leads a talented group a clinicians and researchers in a Department that is recognized for its innovation in enhanced recovery and the perioperative home, and who’s research program is in the top ten NIH funded programs in the country. Dr. Berkowitz came to UAB after a tenure of 25 years in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine where he had a joint appointment in Biomedical Engineering. He received his residency and cardiac fellowship training at Duke University, followed by post-doctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Debra Schwinn, a mentee of the Nobel Laureate, Dr. Robert Lefkowitz. Dr. Berkowitz directed of the Division of Cardiac Anesthesia. The Division grew to 17 specialty trained faculty with diverse research interests, significant NIH, and foundation funding and over 50 peer-reviewed publications annually under his leadership. He was promoted to Vice Chair for Research at Hopkins where he managed a $13 M portfolio of research grants. In addition to his clinical responsibilities as a cardiac anesthesiologist and Division director and then Vice Chair for Research, he is directed of an integrated vascular biology laboratory. This enterprise was funded for over 15 years by the American Heart Association, the NIH and NASA. Dr. Berkowitz’ research has focused on vascular pathobiology. In particular his interests have encompassed mechanisms of endothelial dysfunction and nitroso-redox imbalance that contributes to vascular diseases such as aging and vascular stiffness, atherosclerosis, and radiation induced vascular injury. Dr. Berkowitz has identified a number of potential mechanism that contribute to age-related vascular stiffness and systolic hypertension. Dr. Berkowitz has been responsible for training many clinical and research fellows that have gone on to accomplished biomedical careers.

Randal Blank received a B.S. in Biology in 1981 and a Ph.D. in Physiology in 1986 from The Pennsylvania State University and a M.D. from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1997. After residency training in Anesthesiology at the University of Virginia Health System, Dr. Blank joined the faculty where he became the Chief of Thoracic Anesthesia. He was awarded American Board of Anesthesiology Certification in 2002 and is currently licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA. His primary clinical interests include thoracic anesthesiology as well as international medicine; he has served in various teaching and clinical roles in India, the Dominican Republic, and Rwanda. His professional affiliations include the International Anesthesia Research Society, Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Academy of Distinguished Educators and he is currently involved in clinical research in the following areas: anesthetic factors in the pathogenesis of lung injury, lung injury during one lung ventilation and thoracic surgery, optimizing protective ventilation during thoracic surgery, and enhanced recovery after thoracic surgery. He is Associate Editor of the text: Principles and Practice of Anesthesia for Thoracic Surgery, served as a founding member of the Organizing Committee for the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists Thoracic Anesthesia Symposium and currently serves as the Coordinator for Workshops and Problem Based Learning Discussions.

Dr. Carvalho is the Chief of Obstetric Anesthesia and Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Stanford University Medical Center, and the Past President of the Society of Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP). He has published extensively in the field of Obstetric Anesthesia with over 250 peer-reviewed articles, editorials, reviews, book chapters, and commentaries. He has received several NIH, pharmaceutical and institutional grants, and won numerous research awards including three Best Research Papers at SOAP scientific meetings. Dr. Carvalho has won the Teacher of the Year award at SOAP and at Stanford University’s Departments of Anesthesia. He has presented at over 170 regional, national, and international meetings and visiting professorships. His scholarly activities are focused on clinical and translational research in the field of cesarean and labor analgesia, perinatal pharmacology and immunology.

Dr. Vincent Chan received a Bachelor of Science degree (Biochemistry, Honors) and his MD degree from McGill University, Montreal and then obtained postgraduate training in Anesthesiology at University of Toronto, Toronto and board certification (FRCPC, Anesthesia).
Dr. Chan is acknowledged by his colleagues as an international leader in the fields of regional anesthesia and pain medicine. In 2009, he was awarded the Gold Medal Award by the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society, the highest personal award in recognition of his contribution to anesthesia in Canada through excellence in teaching, research, professional practice in the field of ultrasound guided regional anesthesia. He was President of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) from 2009 to 2011. In 2011, he was conferred with the award of the FRCA Fellowship by Election by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (UK). In May 2013, he received the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) Teaching Recognition Award for Achievement in Education. In October 2013, he received the Distinguished Service Award from European Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Therapy (Spain) for outstanding clinical, educational and scientific achievements in anesthesiology, and for contributions to the increased knowledge and practice of regional anesthesia. In April 2016, he received the Gaston Labat Award from ASRA for outstanding contributions to the development, teaching and practice of regional anesthesia. In September 2016, he was conferred with the Carl Koller Award by the European Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Therapy in recognition of his outstanding lifetime contribution to the field of regional anaesthesia and pain medicine. In April 2017, he received the Distinguished Service Award from ASRA.

Jen-Yin, Chen is an Associate Professor in Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science, Tainan, Taiwan. She rose to the Chair of the Anesthesia Department and Subdivision Pain Management in Chi Mei Medical Center in 2013. In 2013 she completed a PhD in Food Science and Biotechnology at the National Chung Hsing University. Her medical qualifications and specialties include anesthesia, pain medicine and medical nutrition therapy. She has chaired Chi Mei’s Committee of Medical Nutrition Therapy and Committee of Pain Management. She has been invited as speaker in local and national meetings. She won several teaching awards. She currently works as an anesthesiologist and pain management physician. She has been interested in the use of nutrition and intervention in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia and chronic pain. Major interest in anesthesia includes hemodynamic monitoring in anaphylactic shock and anesthetic management in transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy. Dr. Chen has written more than 50 peer-reviewed articles on anesthesia and pain management. In 2015, she received the Outstanding Research Award of Taiwan Pain society.

Hans D de Boer, MD, PhD, is a staff anesthesiologist and Pain Specialist in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the Martini Hospital in Groningen, The Netherlands.
Dr. de Boer was born in Veendam, The Netherlands. Upon graduating from the Anthony Winkler Prins Lyceum in Veendam, he started his study of medicine at the University of Groningen. After his registration as doctor of medicine he worked as a resident at the Thoracic Surgery Department of the University Hospital in Groningen and Nieuwegein.
In 1997, Dr. De Boer started his training in anesthesiology and pain medicine at the Institute for Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the Radboud University Medical Centre Nijmegen (Department Chair: Prof. Dr. LHDJ Booij). After his registration as anesthesiologist, he accepted an appointment as a staff member and research scientist at the Radboud University Medical Centre and is currently working at the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the Martini General Hospital Groningen. During his specialist training, Dr. de Boer began conducting research on sugammadex at the Experimental Laboratories of Anesthesiology at the same institution in 1998. After finishing his thesis on sugammadex (award winning: best national thesis prize 2009) 2008 his involvement in the development program of sugammadex continued and resulted in over 40 publications and more than 120 international lectures on this subject. He is furthermore scientifically interested in neuromuscular management, perioperative management and patient safety, innovations in anesthesiology and legal issues in perioperative patient care. Furthermore, he is active in implementing evidence based medicine in colorectal, urologic and gynaecologic surgery and implementing opioid free/opioid sparing anesthesia techniques programs. Dr de Boer has special interest in obstetric anesthesia in which he is one of the founders of the skin-to-skin caesarean section globally. In all these fields he is involved in educational and scientific programs.
Dr. de Boer is a member of the Dutch Society of Anesthesiology, the Dutch Society of Pain Medicine, American Society of Anesthesiologist and the European Society of Anesthesiology, European Society for Peri Operative Care of the Obese Patient and the ERAS Society, where he serves as treasurer. He is the author of several journal publications, abstracts and book chapters and is a guest reviewer of the major international anesthesia journals and is a member of the Dutch Board of Medical Licensure & Discipline.
Furthermore, Dr. de Boer is involved in local, national and international committees regarding patient’s safety in anesthesia.

Lars I Eriksson, MD, PhD, FRCA is Professor of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Karolinska Institutet and Head of Research and Education and Staff Anesthesiologist at Function Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care at the Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. He is Senior Advisor to the Karolinska Instituet Vice Chancellor.
Lars I Eriksson is heading a translational research program focusing on longterm impact by anesthesia and surgery on higher brain functions and in particular the the role of the immune system. His research project includes national and international collaborations within experimental, clinical and outcomes research. Funded by major national and international bodies, he has published over 130 original papers and have written over 20 book chapters. Since 2007, he serves as co-editor for the Miller´s Textbook of Anesthesia and has been awarded the 2019 James E Eckenhoff Lectureship at University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA, the T. Cecil.Gray Honorary Gold Medal from Liverpool University, UK and holds a Honorary Fellowship at the Royal College of Anaesthetists, London, UK.

Jeff Gadsden

Jeff Gadsden Duke University Medical Center, USA

Jeff Gadsden is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Duke University, Chief of the Division of Orthopedic, Plastic and Regional Anesthesiology, and Program Director for the Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship at Duke. He graduated with an M.D. in 1999 from Queen’s University, Canada, and undertook training in anesthesiology at the University of Toronto and St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. Dr. Gadsden holds fellowships with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Anesthesia) and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, and is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. After working in both Canada and Australia, he decided to return to the U.S. to focus on his teaching and research interests, which include ultrasound-guided nerve blockade, the monitoring of regional anesthesia, trauma, and education. Dr. Gadsden has authored three books and multiple peer-reviewed articles, and has lectured extensively both nationally and abroad.

Marcelo Gama de Abreu, MD, MSc, DESA, PhD is Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. He is also Vice-Director of Department, Head of Research, Director of the ECMO program, and Head of the Pulmonary Engineering Group.

Dr Gama de Abreu received his medical degree from the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), and the electronic engineer and master in sciences in biomedical engineering degrees from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. He received his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of Heidelberg and the PhD degree from the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. He is a Diplomate of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (DESA).

Dr. Gama de Abreu has published extensively. He has authored or co-authored over 750 peer-reviewed journal articles, case reports, editorials, abstracts and book chapters. Doctor Gama de Abreu is author of several patents in the field of respiration and mechanical ventilation. He performs reviews for several prestigious journals including Der Anaesthesist, Anesthesiology, Anesthesia and Analgesia, Respiration, Intensive Care Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Critical Care, and American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Gama de Abreu has made numerous presentations and been invited lecturer on several occasions. He has also attended several national and international meetings as a speaker. His main research activity is focused on the impact of mechanical ventilation on lung function and damage, both in anesthesia and intensive care. Dr Gama de Abreu has made important contributions to the understanding of mechanisms of assisted spontaneous breathing and the development of new modes of mechanical ventilation. He has been conducting and coordinating different clinical trials in the field of mechanical ventilation.

Dr. Gama de Abreu is an active member of many professional societies, including the European Society for Anaesthesiology, European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and German Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care. He is honorary member of the São Paulo State Society of Anaesthesiology, Brazil, and the Romanian Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Romania. In the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA), Dr. Gama de Abreu served as chairperson of the Subcommittee Respiration and Airway Management, member of the Research Committee, elected member of the Nominations Committee, and is now member of the Board of Directors.

Axel Hofmann is a Doctor of Medical Science and holds a Master’s Degree in Economics. He is a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Anesthesiology at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Western Australia and an Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Population Health Research at Curtin University in Western Australia.

With his background in health economics and outcomes research, he has specialized in the field of Patient Blood Management (PBM). His main activity is the implementation of PBM programs in the public health sector in (Western Australia Department of Health; European Commission, DG Sante) and in large hospital systems. He is also a leader in PBM related clinical and health economic outcomes research.

Axel Hofmann published in international peer-reviewed medical journals including Anaesthesia, Annals of Oncology, Anesthesia & Analgesia, Anesthesiology, British Journal of Anaesthesia, British Medical Journal Open, Current Opinion in Anesthesiology, European Journal of Anaesthesiology, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Journal of Clinical Oncology, The Oncologist, Transfusion, Transfusion and Apheresis Science, Vox Sanguinis and Transfusion Medicine Reviews, and he has authored/co-authored numerous book chapters. He is an invited speaker at international symposia and congresses, universities and medical schools, government agencies and health economic expert meetings. Dr. Ikezaki MD.,PhD. is vice president of Kawaguchi Heart Lung Hospital and Yamato Seiwa Cardio Vascular Hospital.
He graduated Nippon Medical School in 1987 and joined residency program for anesthesiology in Nippon Medical School hospital and National Cerebral  and Cardiovascular Center. As fundamental research, he also investigated mechanism of microcirculation under inflammation at Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine in University of Illinois at Chicago. He has been councilor of Japanese Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, The Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine and Japanese Society of Respiratory Medicine. His major interests are cardiovascular anesthesia, perioperative intensive care, and perioperative echocardiography, and he also holds ASCeXAM and PTEeXAM testamur. Professor. Karmakar Manoj Kumar is the Director of Paediatric Anaesthesia at the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is currently the ScientificConvener of the Asia Oceanic Society of Regional Anaesthesia (AOSRA) and the past president of theAsian Society of Paediatric Anaesthesiologist’s (ASPA). Professor Karmakar is internationally recognizedfor his research in regional anesthesia, in both adults and children, and his areas of research interest includethoracic paravertebral block, spinal sonography, ultrasound guided central neuraxial blocks and localanesthetic pharmacology. Professor. Karmakar has pioneered many novel regional anesthetic techniquesand published extensively, with a total 296 publication, of which 137 are in high impact peer reviewjournals. Dr. Karmakar currently serves as an associate editor of the Journal of Regional Anesthesia andPain Medicine, and is a guest reviewer for several major peer reviewed journals in anesthesiology. ProfessorKarmakar has been invited as a guest speaker to innumerable international meetings around the world, been a faculty of countless international workshops, and has lectured as a Visiting Professor at reputable international universities. Lars Konge is a certified cardio-thoracic surgeon and the head of research at the Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education and Simulation (CAMES), Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark. He has a Ph.D. in assessment and his main research areas are simulation-based training and certification of technical skills. Professor Konge is one of the world’s most active researchers in medical education and has published more than 200 papers in international peer-reviewed journals. Kiyoyasu Kurahashi, born in Tokyo is a Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at International University of Health and Welfare (IUHW) School of Medicine, Professor of Clinical Medical Science at IUHW Graduate School of Medicine, Senior Professor of Office of Medical Education at IUHW, Director of Intensive Care Medicine at Mita Hospital, and Director of Anesthesiology Departments of IUHW Hospitals. Dr. Kurahashi graduated with an M.D. in 1989 from Yokohama City University School of Medicine, Yokohama, Japan and obtained doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree at Yokohama City University Graduate School of Medicine. He is board certified by the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists and the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine. Dr. Kurahashi is acknowledged by his colleagues as a scientist in a field that researches on lung injury, sepsis, ARDS, and ischemia-reperfusion injury. Back in 1996, Dr. Kurahashi moved to San Francisco, CA, USA to contribute to research team of Prof. Jeanine Wiener-Kronish at the University of California San Francisco until 1999. He then participated in research with Thomas Martin at the University of Washington from 2007 to 2009. Dr. Kurahashi contributed to establish guidelines including “the airway management guideline 2014” of Japan Society of Anesthesiologists, “ARDS clinical practice guideline 2016” a collaboration of Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine, Japanese Respiratory Society, and Japanese Society of Respiratory Care Medicine, and “the JRS Guidelines for the Management of Cough and Sputum” of Japanese Respiratory Society. He took/takes a part as a national coordinator in LUNG-SAFE and WEAN-SAFE studies both conducted by European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, and SQUEEZE study that is conducted by European Society of Anaesthesiology.

David Mazer, M.D. is a Professor in the Departments of Anesthesia and Physiology at the University of Toronto. He received his medical training at the University of Saskatchewan (MD 1978) and worked as a family physician in Inuvik NWT (north of the arctic circle), Whakatane New Zealand, and Cudworth Saskatchewan before attending the University of Toronto to complete his residency in Anesthesia (FRCPC 1985). He is Past President of the International Liver Transplantation Society and was recently an “At Large” member of the OPTN/UNOS, Membership and Professional Standards Committee. He is currently serving as a member of Editorial Board of the Transfusion journal and Contagion and supplement editor for the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia.

He is the author/editor of multiple book chapters and contributes to textbooks on blood management, such as Perioperative Transfusion Medicine 2nd Edition (2006) by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Perioperative Blood Management: A Physician’s Handbook, 1st Edition (2006) and 2nd Edition (2009) by American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM), Basics of Blood Management 1st Edition (2007) by Blackwell, and Health Care Costs: Causes, Effects and Control (2009) by Nova Science Publishers. Dr. Shander is a reviewer for the journals Critical Care Medicine, Anesthesiology, Anesthesia and Analgesia, and Transfusion among others. Dr. Shander’s publications are in the top 5% of the “most read authors” for Academia.

He serves as Past President for the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM) and is a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Shander is a founding member of the Board of Directors and was a Past President for National Anemia Action Council (NAAC). Dr. Shander is also a founding member and President-Elect of the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA) formerly, ASCCA where he serves on committees, both locally and nationally, and in addition, is a member of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) where he served as Chair of Committee on Patient Blood Management. In 1997 Dr. Shander was recognized by Time magazine as one of America's "Heroes of Medicine." Dr. Shander is the Executive Medical Director of the Institute for Patient Blood Management & Blood Medicine and Surgery at Englewood Hospital, which under his direction, received the NJBIZ Magazine’s 2010 Healthcare Hero Award. Dr. Shander received his medical degree from the University Of Vermont College Of Medicine in Burlington and completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York, where he also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Hideki Taniguchi is currently acting as Director of Department of Patient Support Center at Saiseikai Yokohamashi TOBU Hospital. The patient support center plays a central role in performing an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol in the hospital.
He has created a perioperative period management team consisting of surgeons, anesthesiologists, and paramedics, and provides team supports from preoperative management to postoperative management. The results of clinical research on ERAS were highly recognized, and in November 2018, he received the Futami Kosaka Memorial Award from the Japan Society for Clinical Anesthesia for "Studies on the Spread and Effects of ERAS in the Field of Anesthesia in Japan."
The Futami Kosaka Memorial Award is the highest award in the clinical anesthesia field with the history of more than 20 years. It is awarded to the person who made the best achievement in the past five years up to December of the previous year by publishing a paper passing an objective peer review process or by publishing plural papers on a series of research themes.
In 2012, Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists (JSA) created “Preoperative fasting Guidelines” led by him. The publication of the guidelines became a turning point for the ERAS protocol spreading throughout Japan. He is concurrently acting as a visiting professor at Tokyo Healthcare University Graduate School, a clinical professor at Graduate School of Kanagawa University of Human Services, and a part-time lecturer at Department of Anesthesiology, Keio University School of Medicine, and so on.

Dr. Jingping Wang is an Assistant Professor at Mass General Hospital (MGH) of Harvard Medical School (MHS) in Boston, USA. He graduated from JiLi University with a M.D. degree in 1985 and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) at Peking Union Medical School in China in 1995. After completing his residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2006, he joined the faculty at MGH/HMS where he provides clinical care, supervises trainees and conducts clinical research on perioperative pain management. Fletcher A. White is the Vergil K. Stoelting Professor of Anesthesia at the Indiana University School of Medicine and a Research Scientist at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Prior to joining the staff at Indiana University, Dr. White was an Associate Professor at the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago in both the Anatomy/Neurobiology Department and the Department of Anesthesiology where he served as Vice Chair of Research.

Dr. White received his scientific degrees at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo (MS; Pathology and PhD; Neurobiology) and completed his postdoctoral fellowship training at Washington University School of Medicine (Neurology) and Massachusetts General Hospital (Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine). He also held the position of Associate Research Scientist at Yale School of Medicine (Neurology and Anesthesiology) prior to his faculty appointment in Chicago.

Dr. White is an internationally-recognized expert in the field of pre-clinical and clinical chronic pain mechanisms. His research group studies the sequence and nature of the neuroinflammatory events that govern neuron and non-neuronal communication in the nervous system following injury. Many of these events may be critical for the discovery of new mechanisms and targets for chronic pain treatment. Dr. White has received numerous grant awards for his pioneering work in chronic pain from the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, the National Society for Multiple Sclerosis, the National Institutes of Health and the US Department of Army.

Boon-Hun YONG graduated from University of Malaya in 1983 and trained in general medicine, anaesthesia and intensive care. He holds Fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh), Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), and Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists. Dr Yong has a life-long interest in training medical students and anaesthesia residents. He was a Lecturer at the University of Malaya in 1989, and on moving to Hong Kong, was Honorary Clinical Associate Professor from 2004-2014 at the University of Hong Kong. He has been External Examiner for the Degree of M Med (Anaesthesiology) in both Malaysia and Singapore, and was an Examiner for the ANZCA Final Fellowship examination from 2003-2014. Currently he is an Examiner for the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists. Dr Yong was the Team Head for liver transplantation anaesthesia at Queen Mary Hospital from 1998-2011, where he developed anaesthesia protocols and trained the team to manage patients undergoing anaesthesia for liver transplantation. He also established an international fellowship program to train overseas fellows in this field. He is a member of the Transplantation Society (TTS) since 2000, and was a member the committee for Anesthesia and Critical Care (2015-18). He is also a member of the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) since 2004, on the committee for Anesthesia and Critical Care (2014-17).

Dr. Jeron Zerillo, MD is an Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the Division of Liver Transplant Anesthesiology at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He received his MD from New York University School of Medicine and his residency and fellowship training was at the Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Zerillo has worked to improve the care of patients undergoing abdominal organ transplantation through scholarly activity and work with organizations such as the International Liver Transplant Society and the Society for the Advancement of Transplant Anesthesia. Dr. Zerillo has served on the Vanguard Committee of ILTS and currently serves on the Anesthesia Committee. He currently is a member of the Executive Council of SATA while serving as the Co-chair of the fellowship committee, and is a member of the Scientific Committee, and the Transesophageal Echocardiography working group. Dr. Zerillo serves as an Associate Editor of the transplant section of the journal, Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia.
Currently, Dr. Zerillo has been focused on assessing and increasing the utilization of TEE for liver transplantation. He created a TEE workshop that has been part of the ILTS program for three consecutive years, and is currently working on recommendations on the use of TEE through SATA.
